Taste of Lantana to kick off memorial golf tournament

The 2010 Lantana Golf Club Memorial Tournament committee has created a new event, Taste of Lantana, to kick off this year’s tournament.

Taste of Lantana is open to the public and will feature cuisine from area restaurants, live music, dancing, raffle and silent auction at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14 at the Lantana Golf Club.

Participants can sample menu items from Café Italia, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Cristina’s Fine Mexican Restaurant, Fish City Grill, The Grotto, Lantana Grill, Palermo’s Italian Café, Ricky Que’s Barbeque, Rouge Moderne Bistro and Wine Cat Bistro while enjoying live music from the Mighty Real Band. The Lantana Grill will offer a full cash bar throughout the evening.

All proceeds from Taste of Lantana will benefit the Mark Austry Family Memorial Fund and the Lantana Golf Club Student Scholarship.

Admission is $25 per person. North Star Academy will provide child care for $5 per hour, per child from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. at their location in Lantana. RSVP to Abbey Knight at 940-728-4653 ext. 307 for the event and child care.

“Expanding the Lantana Golf Club Memorial Tournament with the Taste of Lantana event provides an opportunity for those who do not golf to support these two great causes,” said Stephen Phillips, Lantana Golf Club general manager.

The Mark Austry Family Memorial Fund was established following the untimely death of Lantana resident Mark Austry on March 14 after he finished the Rock ‘n’ Roll Dallas Half Marathon.

Austry, a 32-year-old husband and father to two young daughters, died unexpectedly from the rare disease viral myocarditis, an inflammation of the myocardium caused by a low-lying infection of the heart.

An avid golfer, Austry won the Lantana Golf Club Men’s Championship six years in a row and holds the course record of 63.

The Lantana Golf Club Student Scholarship was established in 2009 by the Lantana Golf Club members to provide an annual scholarship to a college-bound Guyer High School Senior. This year’s recipient was Karen Pidlaoan.

A few tee times still remain for the 2010 Lantana Golf Club Memorial Tournament on Sunday, Aug. 15. The four-person scramble tournament will feature a double shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The tournament registration fee of $125 per player includes green fees, cart, range balls, lunch, goody bag, prizes and hole-in-one contests. To register for the tournament call the pro shop at (940) 728-4653, ext. 1.

The Lantana Golf Club Memorial Tournament was founded in 2007 by the Lantana Golf Club members as a fundraising event for local charitable causes.

Previous tournaments have benefited Wipe Out Kids’ Cancer and Denton County Friends of the Family. The tournament fully funded the Hank Womack Scholarship at Newman Smith High School in 2009.

The memorial tournament honors the Lantana Golf Club members who have passed away: Hank Womack, Hal Maxwell, James Corbett, Rachele Bowman, Mark Austry, Eddie Little and Mary Helen Moulton.
