Local surgeon performs new procedure

Dr. Scott McDearmont, a board certified general surgeon in Flower Mound, recently performed the first Single Incision Appendectomy at Medical Center of Lewisville.

This technique refines the laparoscopic appendectomy and eliminates two of the three incisions. The single incision is in or below the belly button and after it heals it is hardly noticeable.

McDearmont, mayor-elect of the city of Highland Village, trained at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and spent time training at the Southwestern Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery.

“My surgical training at UT Southwestern provided an excellent experience in laparoscopic surgery,” said McDearmont.

“Through continuing education I have learned the technique SILS or single incision laparoscopic surgery. SILS further eliminates the invasive nature of surgical procedures.”

McDearmont added, ”In today’s healthcare environment, it is incumbent on physicians to move in the direction of more efficient and higher quality procedures for our patients. I feel SILS is one of these procedures. Getting my patients home quicker with less post-operative pain is the best reason to use SILS.”

McDearmont said that he is excited about further uses of SILS, including gallbladder removal as well as diagnostic laparoscopy.
