The Denton County Health Department is sponsoring their 3rd annual ‘Take the First Step’ 5K/1Mile Fun Run/Walk Event on Saturday, April 24, at South Lakes Park in Denton.
‘Take the First Step’ is an event that encourages residents to engage in physical activity as a means to improve their health and reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease, the number one killer of Denton County residents, according to county health officials.
The free community event is stroller and pet-friendly with free t-shirts provided on a first come, first serve basis with advanced registration. DCHD invites active residents to attend in support of increased awareness of the risk reduction strategies for cardiovascular disease. Less active residents are encouraged to use this as a first step to becoming active.
“It is our hope that the “Take the First Step” event will be a springboard into a healthier lifestyle for all participants,” said Betsy Haggard, Denton County Health Department spokesperson.
Approximately 62% of Denton County residents are overweight. About a third of adults have high cholesterol and nearly 18% have high blood pressure, Haggard said.
Registration for the event will be through Betsy Haggard at firstname.lastname@example.org or (940) 349-2922. Registration forms can be found at www.dentoncounty.com/health by clicking on the “Take the First Step” link.
Event packet pick-up will be on Thursday, April 22, from 8:00am to 8:00pm or Friday, April 23, from 8:00am to 5:00pm at the Denton County Health Department located at North Loop 288 Denton, TX 76209. The race will begin at 8:00 a.m.
“We encourage every one of all ages, abilities, and fitness levels to participate. Friendly, leashed-pets are welcome,” said Haggard.
